It’s been awhile since my last report on the state of our home improvement projects. Since then, I finished repainting my sun room in a cheery light orange, and we’ve started finishing the attic. Everett’s family has been so kind as to bring his piano up from Michigan, and have been here for several days helping us with the attic. Fortunately for us, they have the tools and expertise to get the job done.
Last Thursday, demolition was completed. On Friday, insulation was installed, and the first part of the ceiling drywall went up. The insulation was completed on Saturday, and the ceiling continued to grow. Yesterday, while I was out at a social function for the iSchool, the ceiling progressed further. Because it’s an attic, almost everything is ceiling and requires very heavy 5/8″ drywall, though there are still 23 sheets of 1/2″ drywall in my brother-in-law’s truck bed for wall surfaces. I believe that they are finishing up the ceiling pieces right now, which is good because Everett and I both have to get back to work tomorrow, leaving only Everett’s brother and father to continue working on putting up walls.
It will take quite a while to totally finish the attic, which I think we are transforming into a normal second floor by virtue of properly finishing it. The ceilings are certainly high enough. After our relations return to Michigan, we will still have “mudding” to do on the drywall seams, followed by sanding, then priming, and someday, paint and trim. Home improvement is a never ending project.
